Sigismund was born in the city of Whitport. His mother and father were associated with the city guard in different capacities. His mother was a cleric to Sif, goddess of justice, and acted as a mediator with the guard to help people settle disputes fairly and amicably (to avoid things escelating into unrest or worse), while his father was an investigator. His mother died while he was young and his father did all he could to instill the need for strong principles in Sigismund in her absence, often taking him along as he worked.
The major turning point in his life occured when his father (with Sigismund in tow) was called to the residence of one of the major merchants, who had been hosting a social event as part of their continued efforts to grow their influence in the city. His father arrived to find a servant had been killed, and quickly came to understand that he had been slain by the host in a fit of anger after he felt embarressed when the servent had tripped and spilled wine on his clothes as he was talking to some of the other major merchants. As he finished his inquiries, he was taken aside by the then-Merchant leader - Jonathan Prince. Prince tried to sway Sigismunds father to report an alternate series of events, and that doing so would reward him with money and a position of influence in what prince expected to be an upcoming period of change. His father refused, and vowed to bring the merchant to justice.
Unfortunately, the influence of the Merchants was deep enough that it was a simple matter for them to frame Sigismunds father for the crime, and ultimately see him executed - the merchants and Prince using him as a scapegoat to undermine the integrity of the current guard (and by extension the rulership of Lord Ashworth) and help their drive for change. Sigismund was cast out of the city, with none willing to risk assisting him with his persistence as to his fathers innocence and the corruption of the Merchants. He vowed his vengence, both for his father and for all cheated out of justice by the weak hearts of corrupt men.
With little choice but to leave Whitport, he continued to travel and develop his skills by fulfilling warrants or bounties across the towns and cities of Estia - balancing the need for the sword of Tyr and the shield of Sif in the pursuit of justice. He preferred taking on work with the Pilgrim Knights where it was available, believing them to be one of the few institutions across the isles of which he could be confident of their integrity and motives. A chance encounter with Victoria Ashworth, and tales of the depths to which Whitport has fallen under the rule of Councilman Prince, has rekindled his determination to bring justice to Whitport - for his Father.
