Each cardinal gemstone is linked with an element, a rune, a deity, and a school of magic, and a type of essence. There are a myriad of lesser gemstones, such as alexandrine, carnelian, and aquamarine, but they are mostly used for decorative purposes.
Gems are useful both as decoration, magical foci, and as high-density value storage. Gems are usually bought and sold at their full value. A transaction involving many thousands of gold is often conducted at least partially in gems. A thousand gold pieces weighs about 20 pounds, while a gem worth the same maybe weighs an ounce. A drawback with using gems as value storage is that unlike metal coins, they lose value if they are split into multiple pieces.
