Treewarden
Halt! Here, but no further shall you go. This forest is under my protection, and I will not permit you to pass. Turn back in peace, or be stung by my thorn.
Legend has it that the deepest reaches of the forest are protected by mortal guardians, who ensures that the wilderness remains untouched. In return for their loyal guardianship, nature provides both protective and offensive enchantments for these champions of the wild.
This role is most often taken up by elves, halflings, earth genasi, and other races with a connection to the old forests, but this is not always the case. Perhaps you were a lumberjack who now atones for their transgressions against the trees by protecting them? Perhaps you are the shield that guards a druidic grove from outside threats?
Some Treewardens also take on an aspect of the forest in their appearance. The following table provides some inspiration for what that could be.
Appearance | |
---|---|
1 | Your hair becomes green and moss-like. |
2 | Sections of your skin turns to bark. |
3 | Instead of nails, you instead have thorns. |
4 | Your eyes turn emerald green and luminous. |
5 | Butterflies seem to harmlessly flutter around you. |
6 | Seasonal flowers sprout in your hair. |

Barbed Strikes
3rd-level Treewarden feature
The forest imbues your melee weapons with jagged thorns. The first time you hit a target with a melee weapon attack on each of your turns, the attack deals 3 (1d6) additional piercing damage.
Additionally, you learn the Thorn Whip cantrip, and dealing damage with it triggers your Barbed Strikes.
Lumbering Resolve
3rd-level Treewarden feature
You gain proficiency with Heavy Armor and you can use your Strength instead of Dexterity for Initiative checks.
Thorny Rebuke
7th-level Treewarden feature
When a creature hits you with a melee attack while you wear Heavy Armor, you can use your Reaction to reduce the damage taken by your Strength modifier. The attacker also takes piercing damage equal to the amount reduced.
Additionally, you are immune to harmful effects and difficult terrain caused by nonmagical plants and all plants that you summon.
Forest Bond
11th-level Treewarden feature
Your woodland magic implores you to act quickly in combat. On the first round of combat, you can cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 Action as a Bonus Action.
Additionally, the damage of your Barbed Strikes increases to 7 (2d6), and creatures hit by it have disadvantage on attacks against creatures other than you until the end of your next turn.
Finally, when you deal damage to a creature with Thorny Rebuke, you have advantage on your next attack against that target before the end of your next turn.
Guardian of the Grove
15th-level Treewarden feature
Barbed Strikes now applies to all your melee attacks, and the damage reduction of your Thorny Rebuke now equals your Strength modifier plus your Proficiency bonus.
