Alchemist

Some wizards harness magical ingredients to enhance their magic, experimenting with elixirs, tonics, and potions to heal or harm. They are inquisitive scholars of the world and the wondrous ingredients found within, and are often the first to approach a fallen monster to harvest its body parts.

While regular wizards collect spell formulae in their spellbooks, alchemists keep a recipe book of different salves, decoctions, and philters. When other wizards study arcane runes and sigils, an alchemist studies ingredients to unlock their more esoteric effects - depending on the dose and preparation, the same ingredient can be a panacea or a paralytic.

Alchemy is the study of essences, and their application. Flora, fungi, fauna, or mineral, it is all useful to an alchemist with the right recipe.

Alchemy as Artifice

The alchemist uses magic by quickly mixing ingredients on the fly. Most spells are intended to be flavored as magical concoctions that are thrown or administered instead of cast. The spells still follow all the rules for spellcasting, but you should think about what ingredients goes into your various spells.

You might still flavor some simple spells as regular magic (especially those without material components) and use alchemy to extend your own magical powers. Maybe you cast Shield and Misty Step like a normal wizard, but spells like Dragon's Breath and Haste are brewed elixirs.

You should also consider how your ranged spells are delivered. Do you throw glass vials that shatter at the feet of your target, deliver them telekinetically, or does your alchemy supplies include a syringe launcher?

Mortar and Pestle

2nd-level Alchemist feature

You gain access to the Bard spell list, whose spells count as Wizard spells for you (but you cannot choose them as Signature Spells). Your spellbook becomes a book of alchemical recipes. In order to scribe spells into your recipe book, you need to experiment with expensive herbs instead of costly inks.

Additionally, you gain proficiency in Alchemist's Supplies, and can use them as spellcasting foci for your Wizard spells. When you brew potions, you can roll twice and take the higher roll when determining how many potions you craft.

Brew Potion

2nd-level Alchemist feature

As part of a long rest, you can brew a special potion that replicates one of the spells in your recipe book. The spell must have a casting time of 1 Action and cannot be above 5th level. You also need to supply any costly or consumed material components for the spell.

You can use an action to administer the potion to cast the spell without using a spell slot. Using the potion consumes it, and only you can use it. If you brew another potion with this feature, any unused potions are rendered nonmagical.

Calcinator and Alembic

6th-level Alchemist feature

You have learned to imbue your helpful elixirs with protective magic. When you target a single creature with a leveled spell cast through your Alchemist's Supplies, you can also grant it temporary hit points equal to your level in this class.

Noxious Fumes

10th-level Alchemist feature

When you cast a leveled spell through your Alchemist's Supplies and a creature fails their save by more than 5, they are also Poisoned for the duration of the spell (or until the end of their next turn if the spell has an Instantaneous duration).

Additionally, you gain expertise with Alchemist's Supplies.

Toil and Trouble

14th-level Alchemist feature

Through experimentation, you have learned several shortcuts when making potions. You can now also use Brew Potion as part of a short rest.

Additinally, you gain resistance to acid and poison damage, and you become immune to the Poisoned condition.
